Customer Reviews

Riadh Evans

Comparing offers side by side made things much easier. The vehicle weight was listed, so I could check that my UK licence covered it before booking. Picked up in Christchurch and everything was as expected.

Easy as. Good price for a week in Queenstown, booked in five minutes and the car was ready at the airport. Will use again.

Car rentals in New Zealand

New Zealand has two main islands with very different road trips to offer. The North Island has volcanic landscapes around its central plateau, while the South Island is known for its alpine roads and mountain scenery around Queenstown. The Cook Strait separates the two, so a trip across both islands takes more planning than choosing a car. Start with where you’ll pick it up, where you’ll return it, and whether your car rental can be taken across the strait.

Renty brings together listings from different rental companies, so you can compare car rentals for your dates. Each offer has its own conditions, including one-way returns, deposit requirements, mileage limits, cancellation deadlines and payment terms. Search great deals on Renty by pickup and drop-off location to compare available cars. If your itinerary includes both islands, check the rental company’s rules for taking the car on the Cook Strait ferry before booking.

Two islands, one or two rentals

The Wellington–Picton ferry carries cars, but rental companies may restrict taking their vehicles on board. Check the rental agreement before booking a ferry crossing with your rental car. If the car cannot travel on the ferry terminal, you may need to return it in Wellington and pick up another rental in Picton. Vehicle spaces can fill up quickly during summer, so check the rental conditions and ferry availability early.

One rental or two

Within one island, a rental car is straightforward, whether or not it ends where it began. Across the strait, a trip takes one of three shapes. The car can come along on the ferry, where the supplier permits it. It can be handed back on one side and a second car collected on the other, Wellington and Picton being the usual pair. Or the trip simply runs as two separate car rentals, one per island. Which of the three is open to you turns on the supplier and on what is listed for your dates.

Busy rental periods

Two periods squeeze New Zealand's rental supply: the December-to-February summer, when the whole country is on the road, and the Queenstown ski winter. Search early for these periods to compare more of the available cars and special rental car deals. If your plans are not final, look for an offer with free cancellation and check the cancellation deadline and payment terms before booking.

Car rental locations across New Zealand

Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown are the busiest pickup points for car rental in New Zealand, each with a city location and an airport location. Choosing between them really comes down to which half of the country you are driving. They are not the only ones. The places on offer change as car suppliers update their listings, so enter the town you want and see what comes back for your dates.

  • North Island: Auckland, with a city pickup and Auckland Airport (AKL)

  • South Island, east: Christchurch, city location plus Christchurch Airport

  • South Island, lakes and alps: Queenstown, city location plus Queenstown Airport (ZQN)

Christchurch and Queenstown sit at opposite ends of many South Island road trips. A one-way rental lets you travel between them without returning to your starting point.

If you plan to spend a day or two in the city, compare city and airport car hire options by price and opening hours. Check that the pickup time fits your flight, especially if you arrive late or leave early. Smaller towns and ferry ports may also have rental cars available for your dates.

Road rules and conditions

Distances on a New Zealand map look modest and the roads are generally well maintained. Journeys still take longer than the kilometres imply: main routes are often narrow, winding and hilly, and the detours off them are a different proposition again.

Keeping left

Traffic keeps left; the wheel sits on the right. The New Zealand rental fleet is overwhelmingly automatic, so for most visitors the gearbox is not the adjustment — the intersections are. Turning across traffic, roundabouts and the first hour out of an airport are where habit pulls the wrong way. A quieter road is a gentler place to start than a motorway. A solid yellow line on your side of the centre means no overtaking.

The right rental car

Most of a New Zealand itinerary runs on sealed highway, and small cars and mid-size models cover it comfortably. Ground clearance only decides anything on the unsealed sections, and four-wheel drive matters on fewer routes than its reputation suggests. Unlimited mileage cars come on many rental offers, so distance itself often adds nothing to the bill. The mileage line on the offer confirms it.

Rural roads

One-lane bridges are stress free on back roads, especially in the South Island: a large black arrow means you have priority, a red one means you give way, just like in major cities. Sheep and cattle stray onto unfenced roads, most often around dawn and dusk. Fuel stops grow scarce inland and along the west coast. Fill up when the chance appears on your next trip rather than when the gauge insists.
